Hi! I am a Chartered Psychologist, a Director of The Career Institute of Calgary, and Vice President of R.K. Dougan & Associates Ltd., a consulting and counselling firm.
I grew up in South Africa and, after completing high school, took a year off and travelled to Britain and Europe where I enrolled in a high school class in Germany. This gave me a wonderful opportunity to experience education in other countries. I returned to South Africa and graduated four years later as a Speech-Language Pathologist from the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. Within a few years, the opportunity to change careers presented itself, and I joined the National Institute of Personnel Research and became involved in researching many facets of the world of work.
After emigrating to Canada in 1974, I became a small group leader, concentrating on women's needs to develop career goals and directions. This led to a Masters degree in Counselling Psychology, specializing in Career Development, from the University of Calgary.
I have counselled at the University of Calgary and Mount Royal College, assisting students with career/life planning, academic and personal concerns, and stress management. I have also taught psychology courses at Mount Royal College, where I had the opportunity to work with, and learn from, several thousand students over a period of 9 years.
In my private practice as an industrial and organizational psychologist, I have focused much of my energy on working with students and adults, helping them to evaluate themselves and their potential, as well as encouraging them to plan ahead for college or university, and then on to satisfying careers. My husband, Ron, and I are Directors of The Career Institute of Calgary.
